Dr. Alvin Payton Jr.

Born and raised in Valdosta, Dr. Alvin Payton Jr. is a proud graduate of Valdosta High School, where he served as Captain of the 1971 State and National Championship Football Team.

He continued his education at Northeastern State University, earning a degree in Business Administration and Management, and later at Valdosta State University, where he obtained both a Master's and Doctorate in Public Administration.

With a strong foundation in business and public service, he has built a diverse and impactful career — working with the telephone company, Payton Floor Covering, and Wiregrass Georgia Technical College. His commitment to leadership and excellence is reflected in achieving the highest level of training through the Georgia Municipal Association, earning the distinguished Certificate of Dedication.

He dedicated 12 years of service to the Valdosta City Council, including ten years as Mayor Pro Tem, and has also served on the Valdosta-Lowndes Parks and Recreation Authority. His community involvement extends to his faith and civic life through Payton AME Church and lifetime memberships with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the Sons of AMVETS, and the United States Tennis Association.

A devoted family man, he has been married for 49 years and is the proud father of two children, with a daughter-in-law and two grandchildren. Known for his integrity, stability, experience, and leadership, he is recognized as an entrepreneur, businessman, educator, administrator, and retiree whose legacy is rooted in service and impact.
